• Star Anise is the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree Illicium verum. They are 1-inch, deep brown star-shaped pods with six to eight points which each contain a seed. While the names are similar Star Anise and Anise seeds are unrelated. Star Anise has a mild and fragrant licorice flavor with sweet and herbal undertones.
• Ground star anise is the main ingredient in Chinese Five-Spice powder and Vietnamese pho. It’s also part of the Port Royal flavor profile – a mixture of chocolate, grapefruit, and star anise. Use this star anise powder as a rub ingredient for roast pork or beef.

Information: 

• Cloves are the rich, brown, dried, unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, an evergreen tree in the myrtle family. Cloves come from Madagascar, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka.

Information:

• Sourced from black cumin seeds, a variety that’s much darker than the olive green seeds commonly sold. They have a sweeter smell and hints of caraway. Less bitter with a milder pungency, they offer the same buttery and earthy richness one wants from a cumin seed. Use this in any number of homemade spice blends or add to stews, soups, meats, dips, and vegetable dishes.
• Ground Cumin is most commonly added to minced meat, stews, chili, or vegetables.
